The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the worldwide leader for research to cure type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test thier blood and give themselves insulin injections multiple times each day. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.4 billion to diabetes research. The Kentucky chapter is dedicated to raising awareness of diabetes in the Louisville area. Despite his diagnosis, Warren continues to keep a positive outlook on life and believes that "one should never give up hope." 100% of the net proceeds on this day will go directly to alleviating some of the medical expenses accrued since his diagnosis.
West End School - August 2nd, 2010 - $1,500 West End School is an academically rigorous year-round boarding school for middle school boys. Admission is open to boys entering sixth grade who are on free or reduced lunch, are capable of doing academic work at grade level or above and who would benefit from a stable, structured and safe environment. The school opened its doors in 2005 because of the growing need for alternative forms of education, particularly for the young men in our community. For many of these students, the middle school years are a transitional 'tipping point' both socially and academically. Boys especially are at higher risk for almost every index of failure: academic, achievement, truancy, dropout rates, school suspensions and expulsions, delinquency, and incarceration. When rigorous academic standards are in place it is remarkable the progress students make (Many of our boys have gone on to receive scholarships to prestigious secondary schools throughout Kentucky). There is no charge for room, board or tuition and all expenses are paid through donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations.

Recovery from psychiatric illness does not mean finding a cure; rather, it means developing a satisfying, hopeful and contributing life despite the presence of mental illness. Recovery is a unique process for each person; therefore to most effectively promote recovery from mental illness, an array of options that meet individual clients’ needs and preferences must be available. Without Wellspring, many of those we serve would be homeless, hospitalized, incarcerated, and even worse. But with the support of Wellspring’s programs, over 4,000 area adults have been helped to find stability and ability – not just to settle for lives that focus on a disability.
